Var is an inspiring, up and coming rapper based in New York City, who is signed to Nu Element Music. I had a chat with Var about his passion for music (including his music) and free styling. Check out the Q & A below. Enjoy!
Q: What made you realize that you wanted to pursue music?
A: Honestly, it was something that I played around with (free styling). My friends and people that I was cool with always told me that I was good at it, so I took the positive feedback and applied it to myself and to my work.
Q: How long have you been rapping/ making music?
A: I have been free styling for 10 years and doing studio record work for about 2 to 3 years.
Q: How would you describe your music for the public audience if they have never heard you before?
A: I would describe my music as being versatile, something that everyone can listen to. My music is also geared towards the era for which I grew up in.
Q: What are your songs about?
A: My songs are about everyday type things. Fun and cool things that everyone can relate to, such as hanging out with the fellas, talks about meeting ladies, the struggles of society, and political views. That’s why I described my music as being versatile; it really depends on the audience that I am appealing to and what they want to hear.
Q: On your mixtape The Entry Exam, what is your favorite track? Why?
A: That’s hard! There are too many that I like!
Q: Have you expanded/ gone beyond rapping (i.e. producing, writing, singing, performing, playing instruments)?
A: Yeah, I write all the time. However, I would like to learn more about producing, all of the good rappers at some point in time learn how to produce. I would say that I ‘harmonize’ not sing. And I have performed on a small scale; performing is all about timing, when you get the chance you got to hit them with your best.
Q: What do you think your greatest opportunity/ biggest break has been thus far?
A: My greatest opportunity so far has to be when I spent a year in Arizona with DMX (rapper). I got to learn about the music industry and gain vital business experience along the way. I was able to get a first hand viewpoint of how to interact with musicians of all levels. There were some good and bad times of this opportunity, but I am grateful for the bad experiences because it gave me an opportunity to learn more for the future. I was also able to meet artists, such as Chris Brown and Rihanna to name a few.
